Life Adjustments After Having a Baby

Parenthood is beautiful. Having a child with the one you love, building a life together, and starting a family of your own is a wonderful thing. But, like with all good things, you must be able to accept the bad too. Babies are no easy challenge, and the alterations to your daily routine will be severe.

Prepare to be tired and to stay tired for a good few months. Babies are notorious for not allowing their parents to sleep, crying for food every five minutes and messing in their diaper every ten. Sometimes, it's all a parent can do just not collapsing into a crumpled heap some nights.

Being tired makes some people mad. New parents tend to strike at each other, nerves frayed from the constant screaming and crying the night before. This is a difficult period, and the parents of the child must talk to each other and be considerate if they are going to survive it.

When relatives demand to see the new addition to the family, many of us simply can't say no. Of course, this just adds an entirely new batch of problems to the pot; now you have to make travel arrangements, you have to get a house sitter, etc. And no one really wants to go through all that hassle, do they?

Some friendships suffer with the arrival of a baby. A new parent just does not have the time they used to have anymore, and friends who don't have kids will most likely not understand how stressful your life has become. On the bright side, this is an opportunity to see who your real friends are.

Mothers find themselves worried about their kids, sometimes for no reason, and may become overwhelmed. This is just the maternal instinct kicking in, and is nothing to worry about.

Fathers tend to feel the testosterone possessiveness of their mate and offspring; although all men deal with this differently, it is important to be aware of this and prepared for how it will turn out.

And last but not least, we have the ton of responsibility that has just been dumped on the shoulders of the new parent. Gone are the days of partying until five in the morning and coming home whenever you feel like it; you have a child now. He or she comes first always.

Parenting can be a wonderful or hellish experience, depending on how you handle it and if you are truly ready for it. Do your best, find comfort in those you love, and you should be fine.
