As the mother of two boys and a veteran of the so-called friendly skies, I have been in your shoes more than once.

Yes, I know - you don't need my sympathy, or my empathy, or my condolences. You need help! So, for what it is worth, here are my words of experience (errr, I mean wisdom) on how to survive your next trip:

Toddler Air Travel Tips #1: Do not use the white paper bag in the seat pocket in front of you as a paper airplane!

It does not matter that you spent a small fortune loading your Vera Bradley carry-on luggage with goodies aimed at keeping your two-year old entertained for hours. There is an unwritten rule that dictates that your toddler will get bored within the first fifteen minutes of departure.

That white paper bag in the seat pocket in front of you will begin to beckon to you, with the promise that if you transform it into a paper airplane or an origami sculpture, that the tiny passenger sitting beside you will be well-behaved for the next two hours of your trip.

Stop - don't do it! Trust me, as soon as you dismantle the bag, your toddler will upchuck everything he ate for breakfast. And guess where that spew of regurgitated food bits will be directed. Yes, that's right - you will be the unwilling recipient! Your pants, your shoes, yes, even your brand new Vera Bradley luggage, will be covered in the once-digested remains of his breakfast.

My advice - as soon as you board the plane, locate the paper bag and place it where you can grab it within a moment's notice. And do not touch it again, unless you need it for its intended use.

Toddler Air Travel Tips #2: Do not let your toddler out of his seat when the fasten seat belt lights turns off.

I don't have to tell you that toddlers have a difficult time sitting still for two minutes, let alone two hours. Their little legs were built for running, kicking and jumping.

With that in mind, prepare yourself for the fact that your toddler is going to whine, and squirm, and complain, and squirm some more. However, no matter how much he squirms and complains, do not unfasten his seat belt. If you do, be prepared to regret your decision. Why? Well, freed from the constraints of the seat belt, he will wrestle past you into the aisle, and then his inner instinct to run will take over. You can only imagine the rest of the fiasco that will take place.

My advice - do not unbuckle your child's seat belt for any reason. Better yet, bring his car seat with you on the plane, and strap him in good!

Toddler Air Travel Tips #3: Never make eye contact with the other adult passengers.

Unfortunately, the majority of your co-passengers will not be sympathetic to your situation. There is something about flying, perhaps it's the cramped conditions, the high altitude, or the recycled air, that makes them forget that they were once children, or had children, or that the world would end if it were not for children. To them, you are the enemy.

My advice - you should avoid making eye contact with the other adult passengers on the plane. Spare yourself the stares and glares, because what you do not know will not hurt you. You have enough on your plate, without adding a big side helping of guilt.

Finally, keep your expectations realistic. You will survive this journey. Perhaps, you will even have your own travel tips and words of wisdom to impart when it's over!

Jogging Strollers - Fixed Or Swivel? That is the Question

Should you choose a fixed wheel or a swivel wheel designed jogging stroller? Is one design better than the other? The short answer is no, but the correct choice is really determined by the intended use. Some questions to consider before selecting one design over the other;

- What kind of jogger are you (or do you intend to be)?
- Are you a serious runner or simply one who wants to have aerobic options?
- On what type of surfaces will the stroller travel?
- Smooth surfaces such as paved roads or sidewalks or uneven ground such as wooded paths, fields or sandy beaches?
- Will this be your everyday stroller?
- Will this stroller be used for anything except running (jogging), perhaps shopping at the mall or at the super market?

If you are a serious runner or plan to use your stroller on irregular surfaces, the fixed wheel design might be the better choice. The traditional fixed wheel designed jogging strollers allow you to run at speed and still maintain control of the stroller. Fixed front wheel jogging strollers have the single front wheel locked in a position that is parallel to the rear wheels. This means that all three wheels will always roll in the same direction, thus they track straight ahead smoothly. This tracking allows you greater control of the stroller when running at a fast pace or simply when maneuvering on irregular surfaces. Irregular surfaces can cause more problems for the swivel designed stroller than its fixed wheel counterpart. Small stones, small roots, sand and wet ground can cause swivel front wheel to change direction making the stroller wobble or veer off your intended direction. These types of challenges are more easily handled by fixed front wheel designs.

If you are not really a serious runner or want your jogging stroller to be your every day stroller, then the swivel wheel design might be the better choice. Swivel front wheel jogging strollers provide a greater versatility than fixed wheel designs. They still give you the ability to have an aerobic workout but they can more easily maneuver in tight spaces. Turning the fixed wheel design requires lifting the front wheel slightly off the ground and pivoting the stroller on the rear wheels. This maneuver is fine in open space but it can be awkward in a confined space. The front wheel of a swivel wheel design simply turns in the direction you want to go rather than always tracking straight ahead along with the rear wheels. This swivel action gives the stroller a zero turn radius making tight spaces no problem. Swivel wheels work well on relatively smooth surfaces and can be used for light jogging or a fast paced walk. Many models of swivel wheel designed jogging strollers give you the option to lock the front wheel into a fixed position mimicking a fixed wheel design making it even more versatile.

So which is the better design? The answer may differ for each person. The better question is- which design better fits your needs?

Disney World in the Rain - What to do When it is Raining on Your Parade

Yes, unfortunately the Disney magic does not work on the elements and it can be rainy at Disney World. In particular the summer months can experience quite a lot of rainfall. So what are you to do if this happens to you?

Firstly you can see it as a good thing. Rain means that other people leave the parks. The advantage of this of course is that the lines get less and less as people give up and go home. So long as you are prepared then you can be one of the ones that stays and enjoys the shorter lines. To stay dry your best bet is to buy a Disney rain poncho. These enormous plastic coverall ponchos are not the most attractive thing you have ever seen - but they will keep you dry. They are not always displayed in the stores, and you have to ask for them. Perhaps no one wants to admit that it rains in The Happiest Place on Earth. The are pretty though and long lasting, although you probably won't ever use them if you are not in a theme park. I don't think anyone really wants to be seen in a giant plastic rain poncho with Mickey Mouse on the back unless they are in the understanding environment of a theme park! Everyone looks the same in a Disney poncho (unless like me you have had yours for years and are still in last season's color). If you want to be able to recognize your family when they are dressed for the rain, then you may want to buy a poncho from another store!

If you have a stroller with you then always put the poncho over it when you park the stroller outside the ride. That way you won't have to explain to your child, who is screaming in protest, that it really is fine to sit on a wet seat for the next couple of hours. Another idea if you have young children in a stroller is to pack a small towel into the stroller basket - it could be very useful.

Go inside. This might seem a bit obvious but there are plenty of things to do at Disney which are undercover. Showers tend not to last for that long, so if you can sit it out in one of the shows or attractions for a while, then you might emerge into the bright sunlight again.

Take a look at the map. Even dressed in your Mickey poncho don't plan to walk half way across the park in the middle of a downpour.

You could take the chance to exit the park for a while (do not forget your hand stamp). Exploring one of the Disney resort hotels is a great way to spend some time. If you are in Magic Kingdom you can easily get to The Floridian, The Contemporary, and The Polynesian on the monorail or the boat.

So see the rain as an opportunity and turn it to your advantage.

The Sivananda Ashram yoga travel retreat lies on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. A short boat ride from Nassau, the ashram truly sits in the heart of a tropical paradise. Surrounded by an authentically preserved tropical forest, the blue waters of the Atlantic, and white sand beaches, the Sivananda Ashram is aesthetically breathtaking.

Like most tropical locales, there will be mosquitoes so pack your spray. Yoga Travel tip: to ward off skeeters, eat garlic and don't wear deodorant or perfume. Unfortunately, the same tricks that repel mosquitoes also work on humans. You decide.

Right next door to the ashram is Club Med's Paradise Island resort. A true behemoth, Club Med boasts everything from casinos to water slides and can be quite distracting in contrast to the ideals of simple ashram life. And when the techno from the booze-cruise hits your ears when you're trying to hold a headstand, this is certainly true. Despite the distractions, Sivananda Ashram strives hard to uphold ashram expectations, which may or may not be to everyone's tastes.

Accommodations are simple. Just how we would expect them to be if we're on an ashram yoga travel retreat. Reminder: its a yoga travel retreat, not a resort. Even the most expensive rooms do not have TV or internet. This atmosphere is setup with the intention of encouraging simplicity while urging you to go inside to find happiness.

The daily schedule is structured. Morning starts at 6:00am with a meditation. Asana (posture practice) is given twice per day at 8:00am and 4:00pm. The final meditation is at 8:00pm. Both meditation and asana practices are mandatory for guests. I understand the motivation behind strictness. It's an ashram after all, however I'm not sure I agree with this approach. Bodies get tired and your heart may not be into practice at a particular time. In my opinion, no one should have to feel bad about listening to themselves with loving compassion and deciding to take a break.

Meals are given twice per day and the food is 100% vegetarian. Almost all reviews herald the quality of the food being great. Most reviews also say that there's not enough food offered. An on-site boutique offers snacks to supplement your diet. If you have a big American appetite like me, I'd be seeing you there.

As you may already be picking up, the central theme at the Sivananda Ashram could be perceived as strictness. Depending on your religious openness, you may be turned off of the morning chants to Hindu gods. However, many yogis deep into their practice might already be accustomed to this. For me, this is fine. I don't consider myself to be Hindu, but I understand the importance of devotion and dedication of practice.

Many people that have been to Sivananda have reported that they pick up a yogier-than-thou vibe at the ashram. You may have run into this before. Someone with a big case of yoga-snob. This is something that I completely don't agree with. Every level of yogi, and every human being for that matter, should be honored with the same respect. After all, by yogic philosophy, we all carry the same light within us.

In summary, for some, the Sivananda Ashram is an ideal yoga travel retreat; a place for devout yogis to immerse into their practices. The rigid schedules and steadfast ideals perfectly embody the concept of an ashram. For those with more of a yoga travel 'vacation' in mind, this may not be the best choice.
